I had a layover in Nairobi and was confused about whether I needed anything if I wanted to step outside for a few hours. The rule is simple, if you stay inside the airport terminal, you do not need anything, but if you plan to leave the airport, you must get a Kenya Transit eTA. I found the Kenya eTA page really clear. You need a passport valid for six months, a recent photo, and your onward flight booking. It allows a stay of up to three days, which is plenty for a short rest or some sightseeing. Processing takes a few days, so apply before you travel. You cannot work or extend your stay on this permit. Just carry a printed copy with you.
